A large female hyena stood among her close family. A smaller older male, known to clan as Boko the Wise, was by her side. He lay there, relaxing with his eyes closed. His fur was beginning to grey in his old age. But the clan looked to the kind male for advice often. Akida's mohawk fell slightly over her wild eyes as she spoke to her adoptive daughter. It was a question she had known as coming.
"Your lion parents?" Akida's sharp eyes looked into her daughter's vivid green gaze.
"Yes, *Maka. I want to know who they are." Shetani lay near Boko's resting form. She turned her gaze from them, and watched two of her hyena brother's tumble about.
"Aren't you happy here, dear?" Boko's distinctively soft voice came from beside her. He spoke without opening his eyes.
"Of course I am **Juuka !" Shetani said quickly. She had never intended to make them think that. "I just... Wanna know. Can't you tell me?"
The smallest of all the brothers, named Makedde, curled up beside his father. He was too shy and meek to play with his rough older siblings. Not far off, Another one of the hyena brothers, who was slightly older then Makedde, sat by himself. Keeping an ear open to the conversation, Chonyota stayed seperate from the rest of his family. Chon's twin, Kali, was busy wrestling his big brother, the oldest of the four hyenas, Kiongozi.
Kali wriggled his behind and let out a squeaky growl as he prepared a little hyena puppy pounce.
"I'm gonna get you, Kio! Rarr!" The cub leapt up and pulled on Kiongozi's ear.
"It's perfectly understandable Shetani." Akida nodded. "I know how you can find out."
Shetani's ears perked up as little Makedde smiled up at her. He walked over from Boko's side and sat between her front paws, which were enormous compared to the little runt of a hyena that Ked was. "Really, how is that?" Shetani asked listening to her mother, but watching the tiny creature between her paws.
"You have to travel to the land ruled by King Scar."
"How far away is that?"
"A fair distance." Akida looked towards the horizon as she spoke.
"Tell me the way, and I'll go."
"Do you remember where the elephant graveyard is, Shetani?" The hyena matriarch inquired.
"Aye." She replied, tickling Makedde's nose with her tail tuft. Makedde let out a little sneeze, which made Shetani smile as she listened.
"You have to cross it. But you have to be careful. There are other hyenas there, they are not an ally clan. "
"Maka, I can take care of myself well enough. I'm one of the best fighters in the clan."
Boko smiled and winked. "'Cept for the ***Khan."
Akida chuckled.
Shetani only smiled at this comment and nodded. "So it's past the big ol' boneyard, huh? Fine, I'll leave tomorrow." Shetani decided.
*Maka = mother
**Juuka = papa
***Khan = leader
