"Shim'ra, have you gone completely nuts!?"
Boma, a dark grey male hyena, looked down at the unconscious queen of the Pridelands in shock and horror. What could Shim'ra and Kal'chak have been thinking, bringing her here? Had they any implication of what trouble this could bring to the entire clan?
"Aw what're you gettin' so bent outta shape for?" Kal'chak said, grunting as he and Shim'ra deposited the heavy lioness on the dusty earth. "It's just an old demon-cat."
"If it was just ANY old demon-cat it might not be so bad, but do you two twits have any idea who you have here?" Boma retorted, incredulous.
"O'course we do, do we look stupid to you?" Kal'chak spat.
Boma frowned, "You know I'm beginning to wonder. In fact weren't you a part of the original party that got our Roh'mach killed in the first place?"
Kal'chak bared his fangs in a snarl. "Just what exactly are you trying to say, Boma? 'Cause I'm not likin' yer tone."
"I'm saying you have a tendency to do stupid things that cause us all to suffer!" Boma growled, shoving his nose right into Kal'chak's face.
"You better watch yer mouth or I'll make you look worse than Queeny here, Boma!" Kal'chak snarled, pushing Boma back and taking a threatening step towards him, fur standing on end.
"BREAK IT UP!" An ashen female butted in between the two males. She turned to Boma and snarled, "Boma, you especially should know better! We don't have time for infighting like this, we're already dysfunctional enough without our Khan!"
"Some respect you have, Binti," Kal'chak spat. "Callin' our former leader khan as if she were some godless wretch like you. Maybe where you come from you have no respect for Roh'kash or Her chosen, but here we DO!"
Binti growled quietly, "It's an old habit, Kal'chak. Anyway, Boma's right. If that's really the Queen of the Pridelands you have there, then we're all going to be in a world of trouble if we're found out. And they WILL find out eventually! Shim'ra, I know you must have been behind this. Just what were you thinking!?"
"That's what I'd like to know," Boma growled, glaring at her.
"Shim'ra don't have to answer to either of you!" Kal'chak blared.
Shim'ra sat back and watched, amused, as her clan mates bickered and worried over her little stunt. Finally she rose and stretched nonchalantly. "You guys wouldn't know opportunity if it bit you in the butts. Don't you see what we have here? We have a bargaining chip. We can use their queen to get this stupid ban lifted, to get access to their hunting grounds again! We'll be heroes!"
"This cannot work, it will only lead us to trouble!" Boma argued, "You'll have the entire Pridelands baying for our blood!"
Shim'ra scowled, "Look, we didn't hurt their little queen, we just found her, and THEN were kind enough to bring her back here where it's safe. Out there she woulda died or been killed. We saved her life! And they'll do more than thank us for that, they'll reward us!"
By now the entire clan had gathered around the bickering group, all chattering excitedly, some staring at Shim'ra and Boma and others at Queen Nala. Could Shim'ra really appease the Pridelanders and get the ban lifted? If she could, then she would be the savior of them all--no more scavenging in the accursed Elephant Graveyard! To many of the hyenas, young and old alike, the thought of that was like a dream come true.
One of the gathered hyenas suddenly shouted, "It's Washu!" and a hush fell over the crowd as an elder female made her way through, nodding politely at those who respectfully stepped aside to clear a path for her. Washu was an old seer who had come to them from faraway lands. She had the strangest, most exotic coloration any of the Graveyard Clan hyenas had ever seen before; she had normal dark gray fur and lighter gray underfur, but her spots, paws, mane and tail were all a very bright blue, and her eyes were an even brighter orange. It had been those orange eyes that had captivated the hyenas of the clan; especially those who were devout followers of Roh'kash, their goddess the Creator and Great Mother whose heavenly glow was as bright as the sun. Many hyenas said that the old seer Washu had the eyes of Roh'kash Herself.
Washu stepped through the crowd and stopped right in front of the unconscious lioness. She looked down at Nala, staring for a long time as if reading something in the lioness's tattered form. After a moment, she looked up at Shim'ra solemnly and said, "Shim'ra, you were right to bring her here, but she will not bring us what we seek." She paused, her bright orange eyes piercing the younger female. Shim'ra scowled and shuffled uncomfortably under Washu's cryptic stare. Finally the old hyena added, "And she will not bring you what you seek. Shim'ra, to become Roh'mach, this isn't the way. You must face the Tournament like everyone else. This is your god Roh'kash's will."
Shim'ra's eyes widened in shock. How had the old bat managed to see through her that easily? She growled and looked away, "You don't know what yer talkin' about, old one."
"I'm afraid I do." Washu stated simply, then she abruptly turned away from Shim'ra and looked at the crowd behind her. She called out, "What a pathetic lot you young things are. Get the gawks off of your faces and bring the lioness to some shelter. Binti, I know you're no healer, but being an experienced mother you surely know something of tending to wounds. Could you and a few others do your best to patch Queen Nala up?"
"I will," Binti said simply, and she went to help her clan mates lift Nala up. Some of the hyenas from the crowd had already stepped forward to carry Nala to the nearest elephant skull, though none were very pleased about it. Their hate for the lions of the Pridelands went back many generations, since Simba's grandfather Ahadi had banished them here many years ago. The only reason they obeyed Washu was out of their great respect for her, and not to mention out of their fear that if they did let anything happen to the Queen they'd be facing much worse than banishment when Simba found out. Some of them glared at Shim'ra as they passed her for getting them into this kind of trouble, while others grinned at her for they believed that her plan could work.
"Chelewa, come help me," Binti said calmly. A similarly ashen female stepped obidiently out from the crowd and followed along beside Binti and the others. They reached a large, dusty elephant skull and laid Nala down inside. Chelewa, Binti's eldest daughter, went straight to work helping her mother clean Nala's wounds. While Binti's group took care of Nala, the rest of the clan stayed in the main meeting area to see what would happen between Boma, Kal'chak, Shim'ra, and Washu, and what decision would be reached about what to do with the demon-cat queen of the Pridelands.
