Continued from "Has the Outcast Found a Home?"Kurunzi walked faithfully by Decimus' side, still stunned by what had happened."Why would Ardilana say such things...? I know she cares about us, about our heritage. To denounce Narifia like that... I don't know what to think, Deci."

“She’s afraid.” Decimus insisted as they walked “Change frightens and angers her, but she isn’t malicious. She’s protective. And stubborn,” The tiniest glow flared up in his dark red eyes, “And so we have to drag her kicking and screaming into this new way of life. None of the Four’s being left behind.”
The sight of the Waterhole and all its natural beauty almost instantly refreshed him and he was calmer, even if his first instinct was the scan the area for Zurina. He repeated his earlier phrase “But she’ll come round. When it comes down to it, she’s one of us.” He grinned, dipping a paw leisurely into the water. “And trying to backtalk Anasi’s like stepping on the head of a cub!”

Kurunzi nodded, agreeing. "Anasi's always been our voice of reason from the very start. Of course she'll bring 'Lana around."
"Of course she will. I should never even have worried," Kurunzi thought.
"So change scares her," Kurunzi uttered thoughtfully, "You know Deci, I think it kind of scares us all, in a way. We really are taking a chance here, aren't we?"

"Yes, and one worth taking!" Decimus shot back, a little defensively. "This are our lives, and we'll make the best of them damnit, without surrendering ourselves as dead meat or dishonouring our heritage!" Time for a subject change. He sighed and padded around in little circles, things weighing more heavily on his brain than he'd have his friend believe.
"I need to do something about Zurina, Kuru." He said shortly. He'd not mentioned it to anyone before, preferring to believe it was solely his own fantasy, not the worst kept secret amongst his pride. "Too easy to influence me. Too much of a weakness. If Ardilana had said anything else I don't know what I'd have done."

Kurunzi nodded, thoughtfully agreeing with his friend's dutiful words. He watched carefully as Decimus paced around, and concerned he was ready to open his mouth to ask what was wrong until Decimus answered his thoughts.
Kurunzi replied, "Don't let Zurina get too much of a hold on you. I know you've got kind of a fetish for her, but remember where she's from and who she is. The Prideland Princess. Definitely not the sort of creature we'd want to associate ourselves with."
Kurunzi braced himself for a quick-tempered retort from Decimus. He knew that Decimus had more than just a "fetish" for Zurina, but he also knew he needed to speak the truth. "To hold true to the integrities of our heritage, Zurina must not be part of the picture."

Fetish? Normally he’d protest violently, or even take a vicious swipe. But in a way it was too true. He didn’t know whether to break her neck or keep her locked in the dark, for him, and him alone.
“You’re right.” He said firmly. “We’ve got more important things to be concerned with. Change is in the air. I can feel it. And whether we combat or accept it, we need to be alert.” He sniffed. “Little bitch has rebuffed me once too often anyways.”
That was his final word on the subject. “So.” He said relaxing at last and stretching out. “When Narifia has cubs, we have heirs. We’re solidified. A proper bloodline.” He allowed the merest hint of a smile “Gotta admit it’s exciting.”

Kurunzi would have been more surprised at Decimus' calm acceptance of Kuru's statement, if it hadn't been for the fact that Kurunzi also knew that Decimus could at any point be unpredictable. He half-smiled, half-smirked at Decimus' reply. Upon Decimus mentioning Narifia's future cubs (it HAD to happen sometime, right? Whether Narifia was pregnant or not at the moment), Kurunzi nodded enthusiastically.
"Exciting indeed! We'll be a real pride again, Deci. Stability! Security! We'll outdo those Pridelanders in no time," Kurunzi said with a pleased little snarl at the end of his statement.

"In no time?" Dipping his head briefly under water to cool himself completely, he raised it, shaking his mane to shower Kurunzi in a rare playful gesture. "They were outdone the day we grouped together my friend!" Taking a moment to groom his dark coat, its lengh always unpredictale as his brain, he turned to face him.
"Lets go back. If 'Lana's done being moody and female we can get a hunt in. I'm in the mood for a kill. Maybe zebra." He ran his tongue over his teeth in anticipation "Then, when our fair Queen's good and fed, perhaps we can 'gently' question our new Outlander about his intentions."
That was the kind kill he was really spoiling for. Even if he had to maintain a half civil attitude for Narifia's sake.

Kurunzi laughed heartily at his friend's playfulness and raised a paw to shield himself from the onslaught of water drops. It was indeed such a rarity for Decimus to be playful that it was always greatly enjoyed by any who witnessed it. And Deci was right. The Pridelanders WERE outdone, whether they knew it or not. Nothing could keep the followers of Scar and Zira down for long.
"All right, I'm getting a bit hungry myself. Zebra sounds excellent."
Kurunzi smiled at the thought, and smiled even more at what he was sure Deci really meant about "gently" questioning the new lion. He shook of the bit of water still left on his fur and stood to follow Decimus back home.
